This stunning Victorian brooch (c. 1890s) features a lovely coral stone set at the heart of the piece, with a serpent coiled around the peachy hued orb. This decorative salmon pink sphere is carefully mounted in the centre of the thick gold bar, each elegant arm reaching out either side.
The bar and the snake are crafted in honey hued 9 carat gold, the clasp or frame fashioned as a safety pin type closure, the clasp and hinge are both sturdy and securely fastens. The Victorians loved Coral and believed it protected against harm and negative energy, the snake motif a power symbol of transformation, protection, eternal love, and rebirth. This piece is in antique condition, signs of use and wear as expected with age. Frame shows minimal wear and tarnish, hinge in fabulous working condition and clasp fastens securely. Coral in good condition, the snake sits on a rod which is pierced through the coral. No chips to the surface of the coral, internals fractures visible in certain light. A tiny spot of discolouring mainly hidden by the snake's body.
